Potential Design Team Leadership Opportunity | New Zealand
HELP DEFINE A NEW CATEGORY OF YACHTING
Voodoo Yachts is seeking an exceptional Senior Naval Architect and Yacht Designer to help create the next generation of high-performance luxury adventure yachts.
We design and build advanced composite motor yachts from 15 to 40 metres, combining speed, range, efficiency, capability and refined luxury. Our boats regularly set records, break boundaries and challenge accepted ideas of what a motor yacht can achieve.
Driven by our own research and development, we are helping lead the creation of a new category: fast adventure yachting.
THE ROLE
Naval architecture will be central to your role, but we are looking for someone who can think holistically across the complete vessel.
You will be the principal naval architect within a passionate, multidisciplinary in-house design team, working across new concepts, production models and the continuous improvement of existing vessels.
For the right person, there is also the opportunity to lead and develop the design team. Leadership is not essential, but broad design ability, sound judgement and the ability to coordinate, motivate and inspire others would be highly valuable.
Your work will have real influence. You will help shape complete vessels, solve meaningful design challenges and see your work brought to life by our own build team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creating 3d vessel designs and models, as well as developing existing designs for hulls, superstructures, internal structure, internal layouts of accommodation, storage, machinery, electrical and technical spaces, systems design, components, major and minor details.
- Hydrostatics, stability, weight, trim, resistance, powering and seakeeping design and assessment for new and continuous improvement of current vessel designs.
- Develop composite structural arrangements and major load-bearing structures
- Contribute to exterior styling, general arrangements, deck planning and practical vessel architecture
- Develop designs from concept through to production
- Maintain configuration control of master vessel models
- Produce and oversee construction drawings, production information and CNC cut files
- Producing high quality renders from 3d models
- Represent the company to clients, public and suppliers when required
- Work closely with production teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable and efficient
- Liaise with consultants, classification societies, suppliers and specialist contractors
- Contribute to market research and future product development
- Help lead the adoption of new design and construction methods, technologies, materials and processes
- Identify opportunities to improve vessel performance, production efficiency and customer outcomes
- Challenge established methods where better solutions can be developed
Where applicable, leadership may include planning resources, setting priorities, reviewing output, mentoring team members and improving design systems. A Design Team Leader will be expected to create clarity, set a high standard and inspire the team and those around them to perform at their best.
ABOUT YOU
You are first and foremost a highly capable naval architect, but you think beyond calculations and isolated technical disciplines.
You understand that the best yachts emerge when naval architecture, styling, engineering, ergonomics, construction, the human experience, and the environment are considered together.
You combine technical depth with practical judgement, strong design instinct, build knowledge, commercial awareness and exceptional attention to detail. You can move from strategic thinking to detailed technical work quickly, producing accurate, high-quality design output at a high pace suited to an ambitious and fast-moving company.
You are curious and forward-thinking. You follow developments in yacht design, technology, materials, manufacturing and luxury, understanding trends without being controlled by them. You are motivated to introduce better methods rather than simply repeat established ones.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A recognised qualification in Naval Architecture or equivalent
- Significant naval architecture and vessel design experience
- Strong knowledge of hydrostatics, stability, resistance, powering, weight control, trim and seakeeping
- Experience and understanding of the ergonomics of vessels and good marine designs.
- Advanced 3D modelling ability and pace in Rhino
- Strong knowledge of boat build methods, materials and construction across all trades
- Experience taking designs from concept through detailed design and production
- Understanding of classification and regulatory requirements
- Strong general arrangement, spatial planning and systems-integration skills
- Demonstrated ability to complete complex design work quickly and accurately
- Clear communication, organisation and leadership capability
- Ability to balance performance, weight, cost, quality and buildability
- A proactive approach to innovation, continuous improvement and change
Exterior styling, rendering, sketching, hands-on boatbuilding, foil-assisted vessel experience and previous design-team leadership would all be valuable.
WHY VOODOO YACHTS?
Our yachts are designed for owners who want to travel faster, explore further and reach places conventional yachts cannot.
Through advanced hull forms and hydrofoil assistance, and lightweight composite construction, our yachts achieve a substantial reduction in fuel use and environmental impact compared with conventional vessels offering similar performance or capability.
We are committed to continuous development. This role offers the opportunity to help shape not only new vessels, but also new ways of designing and building them, using evolving technologies, materials and processes to produce better boats and better outcomes for their owners.
Behind the boats is a close-knit team of passionate designers, engineers and craftspeople. We work hard, support one another and enjoy creating world-class yachts together. We have an active social club, including but not limited to:
- Weekly soccer game
- Monthly breakfast BBQ
- Fishing competition
This role is based in New Zealand. We welcome local and international candidates. Appropriate work rights are required, with immigration support discussed individually where applicable.
